Arc 2 Episode 12

Arc 2 Episode 11

NOVA

Fuck, less than an hour before sundown.  (mutters) We’re cutting it close.

NOVA

Falling asleep like that is exactly what makes you an easy mark.  Are you not sleeping well? (beat, shouting) hmmm.  Janet!

3

It’s taken care of

NOVA

All of them?

JEANNE

What I couldn’t find, I jammed.

NOVA

(beat)

That’s weird for you

JEANNE

Hatov, sit down.

HATOV

Ehm

NOVA

(uncertainly)

You can talk now, she’s taken care of (beat) everything.

JEANNE

We need to talk.

HATOV

Did (beat) did I do something wrong?

JEANNE

Hatov, I don’t think you’ve done anything worthwhile in your life, much less anything wrong.  (beat) sit down.  Nova, you too.

NOVA

I’m missing something, the last time

JEANNE

Shut up.

NOVA

Fuck you too

JEANNE

  Hatov, tell me about Eolara.

HATOV

What?

JEANNE

This isn’t unexpected and I’m tired of waiting.  I need to know about it, now.

HATOV

Well (beat) that’s (beat) I don’t really

JEANNE

I’m going to explain this to you as simply as I possibly can.  Your only value to me, right now, is as a source of information and a bargaining chip with the G.U.  If you’re not going to tell me what I need, then we’ll go to plan B

HATOV

(hesitantly)

Which is

NOVA

(quietly/annoyed)

Turning you over to the union and wishing really, really, hard that they don’t want you dead.

HATOV

And if they do?

JEANNE

Then I’ve lost a gamble.

HATOV

(annoyed)

I could die.

JEANNE

As far as I’m concerned, your life was forfeit the moment you were sent out of that airlock.  You’re living on Nova’s time and I own that too.

HATOV

Nova?

NOVA

Listen to the heartless bitch, pretty boy.

JEANNE

It’s time for you to decide.  Your fate is in your hands.

HATOV

It doesn’t feel that way.

JEANNE

You’re lucky enough to have two options.  Most people don’t get that many.

HATOV

What are you going to do if they do take me.

NOVA

(quietly)

You don’t need to know that part.

JEANNE

So, Hatov, where does your value lie?

HATOV

(long pause)

What is it you want to know?

JEANNE

Let’s start simple.  Tell me what Eolara is like, warm, cold, is it as advanced as Unia, or

HATOV

(confused and surprised)

As advanced as Unia?

JEANNE

Is that funny?

HATOV

Surely the Union has something better than this, they told us tales of

JEANNE

I don’t care what shit the union told you.  More advanced.  How?

HATOV

Well, uhm, your medicine is (beat) oddly specialized.  It made it very hard for me to find anything for Nova when she was (uncomfortable pause) and you’re all still using power cells, I thought it was because of the cost, and the propulsion systems on your ships are rudimentary, but you’ve expanded the designs in so many ways so I thought  (beat) What?  Why are you looking at me like that?

JEANNE

Did you know about this?

NOVA

Would you be pissed if I said I didn’t give a damn about why they wanted him?

JEANNE

(beat)

Well (beat) what else?

HATOV

Besides the technology?

JEANNE

(beat)

I’m assuming there’s a reason the G.U. didn’t go down and take everything you have.

HATOV

Well, the planetary monitoring system would spot them before they could get anywhere close and we could interfere with their power cells if we really wanted to.

JEANNE

And in the way of weapons?

HATOV

Well, those are very old, most times we don’t need—

JEANNE

I didn’t ask.

HATOV

Ehm, well, they’re mostly used until we can make the eh (high pitched squeal)

NOVA

Fuck

JEANNE

Jesus

HATOV

Uhm, I (beat) I guess there isn’t a word for that.  They’re usually used until we can set the (beat) the, uhm, machine.

JEANNE

The machine? What’s it do?

HATOV

It’s uhm, you know how sometimes there’s a mountain or a river you need to move?

JEANNE

Let’s assume I do

HATOV

Well, it (beat) it moves it, kind of.  The process is a little violent so we usually have to clear the area but it can, well, not move.  But it breaks down the structure or remakes it (?) depending on what we want.

JEANNE

(beat, quietly)

You have a goddamn terraformer

HATOV

A (beat) a what?

JEANNE

Can it change atmospheric conditions?

HATOV

I (beat) well, probably?  It’s very old and it’s really only used to reroute rivers and shift the planetary plates these days.  We have other (beat)  machines for that.

JEANNE

Okay.

HATOV

(long pause)

Nova, did I say something I shouldn’t have?

NOVA

The good news is, I think that you finally made yourself very, very, important.

HATOV

And the bad news?

NOVA

You’ve made yourself very, very, important.

JEANNE

And why hasn’t the union gotten any hands on this tech?

HATOV

They have some, but my Grandfather made it so they could only take what they understand.  Ehm, if they can’t understand why something works, it isn’t allowed off planet.  The entire council agreed to it.

JEANNE

And now?

HATOV

Father’s been working on changing that.  He trusts the union more than grandfather did, but the council needs a 2/3rds majority and, well (beat) is this making any sense?

JEANNE

(beat)

Yeah (beat) your dad’s an idiot.

HATOV

(outraged)

He is not.  My father’s just less wary than a doddering old fool who

JEANNE

Sorry, what’s the union word for a ruler who’s about to give away the only reason your planet is safe?  A genius?  A revolutionary?

HATOV

You have no right to—

JEANNE

(drawl)

I’m sure the union will write him into someone fantastic and forward thinking.

HATOV

You—

JEANNE

(curious)

The question is, why you?  Why all this trouble? Why this galaxy-wide search for a one in thirteen extra? (beat)

HATOV

(Angrily)

I (beat) I don’t know.

JEANNE

(Repeating)

You don’t know (beat, processing) okay

(stands up, starts to leave)

NOVA

Where are you going?

JEANNE

Out

NOVA

(informatively)

It’s almost sundown.

JEANNE

(beat)

I’ll be back before the curfew.

JEANNE leaves

NOVA

(Nonchalantly)

Wow, I’ve never seen her that flustered.

HATOV

(shocked)

That was flustered?

NOVA

Oh, yeah (beat) So, a terraformer pretty boy?

HATOV

I (beat) I guess?

NOVA

Well (beat) that’s pretty fucking cool.
