Arc 2 Episode 7

Season 2 Episode 7: You
Arc 2 Episode 7
NOVA
(heated)
Fuck, you’re not listening

JEANNE
(unimpressed)
I am listening.  It just doesn’t change anything.

NOVA
(frustrated)
Jeanne, they weren’t just acting weird.  They were damn near rabid.

JEANNE
(patiently)
And that doesn’t change the fact that going straight to the Sunorix is suicide.

NOVA
I know.  I know how it sounds, but you weren’t there.  They were treating him like they were going to—

JEANNE
(Raising voice to be heard)
This isn’t the first time the union’s broken protocol because of unexpected circumstances.

NOVA
But—

JEANNE
(loud and patient, driving the point home)
And this isn’t the first time they’ve kidnapped someone.

NOVA
(exasperated, angry)
That’s not the point.  I know what happens to the people they take in the Republic and they weren’t doing that either.

JEANNE
I have contacts with

NOVA
(railing)
Fuck your contacts, we’re wasting time.

JEANNE
(long pause)
Is there some time limit I’m not aware of?

NOVA
(flagging)
Well, (pressing forward) there’s no official

JEANNE
(interrupting, slowly)
So, if we spend an extra month searching what turns out to be a dead end, what does it matter?

NOVA
(trying, w/ a hint of desperation)
That’s a month where you’ll be losing money and a month that will be wasted.

JEANNE
(business as usual)
I’ll consider it an investment.

NOVA
The Sunorix restock starts on the 5th, that’s our best shot

JEANNE
And if we’re lucky we won’t have to deal with that at all.  (Overly indulgent with a bite) But let’s say I’m wrong, we’ll still make it in time.

NOVA
With half a plan.  I think that would count as pretty fucking reckless Jeanne.

JEANNE
(blandly)
Then maybe you’re rubbing off on me.

NOVA
Fuck you.

JEANNE
(dismissing)
Nova, this is not up for discussion.

NOVA
(desperate)
I’m telling you that (we’re wasting time, Jeanne, can’t you trust me)

JEANNE
(sighs, talking to herself)
You’re not even talking to me, you’re talking at me.

NOVA
For once in my life can you just, trust me.

JEANNE
I’m not going to argue with you.

NOVA
(huffs)
Your contact won’t know shit.  Wherever the hell pretty boy’s from, Eolara, Heaven, whatever the fuck you want to call it, the Galactic Union isn’t going to just hand over the coordinates to a goddamned courier.

JEANNE
(retreading, it feels like she’s not really listening)
Nova, I’ve already told you—

NOVA
I don’t think they’ll take the risk and if they know we’re looking

JEANNE
(losing patience)
I’m not stupid enough to leave a trail, Nova

NOVA
No, you’re just fucking unprepared

JEANNE
(Getting frustrated)
I’m wasting time (beat) Good morning Hatov.

HATOV
(Awkwardly)
Am I interrupting?

JEANNE (bored) /NOVA (emphatically)
No, Yes

JEANNE
(Sternly)
We were just finishing up.

NOVA
(irritated)
I think (the fuck not.)

JEANNE
(continuing as if uninterrupted)
We just reached the point where Nova realized that I don’t give a damn about her opinion.

NOVA
(grumbles)
If you would just (take your head out of your ass)

JEANNE
(raising voice slightly)
We’re done
(silence)
What were you looking for Hatov?

HATOV
Eh (beat) lunch?

JEANNE
Yes, I guess it’s about time isn’t it?  Nova?

NOVA
(obviously hostile)
What?

JEANNE
(unmoved)
Go outside, cool your head.

NOVA
(long pause, signs of obvious self-restraint, then haltingly, through grit teeth)
I guess, I’ll fucking, do that then.
Nova walks off, bags wall as she goes.  A frustrated scream sounds from downstairs

HATOV
(quietly)
Was that okay?

JEANNE
Was what okay?

HATOV
Nova, she seemed (beat) upset.

JEANNE
(obvi)
That’s why I sent her outside.

HATOV
I (beat) I’ll go check on the (beat) something

JEANNE
(Sighs)
You’re an awful liar.  Sit down.

HATOV
And if I refuse?

JEANNE
I have free reign of the ship for the next ten hours.  Where do you think you can go that I can’t follow?

HATOV
(pause, thinking)
What do you want?

JEANNE

(still cold)
Lunch and a conversation partner

HATOV
(unhappily)
You had Nova

JEANNE
(blandly)
When she gets like that, I’d have better luck conversing with a wall.  And besides, we need to talk.

HATOV
I’d rather do that with Nova around.

JEANNE
(smiling, not nice smile) Too bad, she’ll be back in an hour and (annoyed) I don’t need her getting in the way trying to “protect you”

HATOV
But—

JEANNE
Tell me about Eolara.

HATOV
(long pause)
What about it?

JEANNE
Everything.  I need to know why the Union is after you.

HATOV
(confused)
It’s just (beat) normal.  We’re very wealthy though.  And rich in minerals?

JEANNE
(waving it away)
That’s not it.  They have plenty of planets for that.

HATOV
That’s all I can think of.

JEANNE
(quietly)
It can’t just be because of the religious connotations.  They can quell that, rewrite it.  (louder) Why you?

HATOV
(baffled)
Well, I’m a prince?

JEANNE
Out of how many?

HATOV
Ehm (beat) there were 15 possible successors.

JEANNE
I repeat, why you? You have 14 replacements even if you were the heir apparent.

HATOV
(beat)
13.

JEANNE
Excuse me?

HATOV
My brother, the first prince, the heir apparent went (beat) missing.  I was trying to find him when I was (beat) stranded.

JEANNE
That’s not matching what Nova told me.

HATOV
(w/ growing confidence)
That is (beat) that is what I can give you (beat) I (beat) I don’t think the specifics are important.

JEANNE
I determine what is and isn’t important.
Silence
(sighs)
Alright, then if the heir apparent is gone, why are they searching for you?

HATOV
(beat)
I’d like to know why, too.  I swear on my goddess, that I don’t know.

JEANNE
Were you next in line?

HATOV
I’m not sure.  I left before it was official.

JEANNE
This isn’t that hard, were you the second born or not?

HATOV
(flustered)
That’s not how it works.  It’s the eyes, I inherited them, so I moved up and then father chooses from his favorites.

JEANNE
Your eyes determine the royal succession?

HATOV
In part.

JEANNE
Why?

HATOV
(You can hear the shrug)
Because that’s how things have always been done.

JEANNE
Why?

HATOV
(Frustrated)
Well, do you ask why the planets orbit the stars?

JEANNE
Gravitational pull.  Kid, you need to start asking yourself some questions.
