Have a nice trip captain. NOVA It won’t be. She’s leaving you, Galaxy Eyes. Turning HATOV Jeanne? Jeanne. Running Jeanne, why didn’t you (beat) wait, please. JEANNE Keep up. HATOV Where are we going? (sighs) Long pause SAWA what is this place? SAWA This location is not in the Galactic Database, however, it appears that we are heading towards the center of a large expanse of floating platforms. HATOV Great. Walking, busy market sounds Fades in to Jeanne asking JEANNE (Hey, I’m looking for) Benjy, human. tall heavyset, red hair? PERSON 1 Can’t say I’ve seen him. JEANNE Looking for Benjy, human, red-hair, tall, heavyset. You see him? PERSON 2 Not with the red hair, but humans can change that if they want to, right. I’ve seen a tall human, if that’s what you want. Can’t say if it’s your Benjy. JEANNE Where is he? PERSON 2 A little ways up, sells really tacky baubles. JEANNE Thanks PERSON 2 No problem. HATOV (beat) You’re not going to pay? JEANNE For what? HATOV The information. They just (beat) they just gave it to you? JEANNE Normal people don’t think about what they say. HATOV This doesn’t feel like a (beat) normal place. It feels like a market for (beat) JEANNE For what? HATOV People like you? JEANNE (scoffs) It’s a market for everyone. You got shit to unload? Here’s where you do it. Dinging bell Geez, he wasn’t kidding Wooden clanking Tacky shit here Benjy BENJY Jeanne. JEANNE You disappeared on me, I was worried you wouldn’t balance the tab. BENJY (beat, softly) I didn’t think about that, until it was too late. JEANNE Was that before you skipped planet, or when you saw me walking here and decided to hide. I have object permanence Benjy, that wasn’t going to work. BENJY I don’t have it. JEANNE What was that? BENJY I sold everything, I gambled everything to get here. I spent my last units on a shitty apartment and these Wood clanking I can’t pay you back. JEANNE What are you running from Benjy? BENJY (laughs) What do you think? The union, they’ve got eyes everywhere, I figured my best bet was here. You know, a tree in a forest? Once they realize I’m not a threat, I figured they’d leave me alone. JEANNE (annoyed) That’s not how it works. BENJY (frustrated, whisper) What other options are there, Jeanne? Let them catch me? Try to outrun them? JEANNE Stop being a coward and make your stand. BENJY You’d say that wouldn’t you? (beat) Well, I can’t pay you, what do you want? JEANNE You could sell the stand. BENJY Please don’t do that. JEANNE Then I want to know why you ran. BENJY Did you miss the part of my plan when I prove that I’m harmless? JEANNE I told you that won’t work. Who are you more afraid of? BENJY (long pause) Who’s he? JEANNE Quit stalling. BENJY I was running my route, got a weird set of coordinates and instructions. But you know, I’m a private contractor, I just deliver stuff, if things seem weird I don’t ask questions, but when I got there, nothing was there, no planet, no asteroid, no ship. Just empty space. JEANNE What was your cargo? BENJY I’m getting there, but my general rule is not to ask. If people tell me they tell me, this time they didn’t. Some people came on loaded my ship, the instructions said not to look, I didn’t look. The most I can tell you is where I came from and where I was meant to go, but even then, it wasn’t (beat) there wasn’t anything anywhere. Empty space, and a figure tethered to nothing knocked on my window. Scared the shit out of me, told me to let them board. What the hell was I supposed to do? I let them in. They didn’t say shit to me, went in the back. The trunk was empty. At least, it was empty as far as I could tell, dumped some shit in the trunk told me to get rid of it and transferred the rest of the funds. They step out, seem to be happy floating there and wave me off. Next thing I know I’m being tracked by the union. They start following me I get paranoid, don’t even want to use the bathroom on planet. They start tailing me, I can’t even go on my usual runs. No one will hire me, money dwindles, start cleaning tanks on non-union affiliated planets, but they’re tailing me. Start taking riskier deals, shit goes south, I get shot and in the chaos I lose them, but they don’t have to tail me anymore. They’ve got my sample. I look for a way out, some people told me of some people who knew how to trick the bio-tag, I was desperate, lost a lot of money, I’m not sure that it worked but I’m hoping that if I disappear, sit here and stay quiet they won’t think I’m worth the effort. JEANNE The person who dropped stuff off on your ship, what’d they leave? BENJY I don’t ask. They told me to get rid of it, I got rid of it. The whole situation was fucking weird, I wanted out. If I’d known this was where I was going to end up, I’d’ve turned it down. JEANNE And you didn’t see the ship or have anything else about the person who boarded your ship? BENJY Jeanne, it was freaky shit, okay? People don’t just come out of nowhere and stay floating in open space. JEANNE Give me the coordinates and write down everything you remember about the person on your ship, the color of their suit, the design, the tether type, everything. BENJY It won’t be much. JEANNE You owe me Benjy, give me everything you’ve got.
