Episode 24
Very loud footsteps
NOVA
Jeez, Galaxy eyes, I know I kinda set you up there, but this was supposed to be me splayed on the floor.

HATOV
(beat)
Nova?

NOVA
Ah, wow.  Alright, you think you can stand?

HATOV
Sound of struggling to his feet
I am a prince of Eolara, of course I can (beat)
Thud as he fails to get up.
Not.  I cannot (laughs) I can’t.

NOVA
Ahh, fuck me.  Come on, give me your arm and (beat) yeah.  You have fun?

HATOV
Everything’s spinning, ‘sthat supposed to happen?

NOVA
Sometimes.  I thought you said you drank at home.

HATOV
I do!  But I stopped as soon as I started to feel warm and sleepy and everything happened so fast.  (Dreamily) It was fun.  Wilm was right.

NOVA
(Huffing)
Who’s Wilm?

HATOV
Who’s Alula?

NOVA
(long pause)
She’s the woman who used to run routes with me.

HATOV
I knew that much.  More.

NOVA
More?  Nice to see drinking doesn’t make you less demanding.  She’d’ve liked you.

HATOV
Where is she now?

NOVA
(beat)
Another route.  Too far for me to visit.  So, who’s Wilm?

HATOV
My brother.

NOVA
He why you want to go home?

HATOV
He’s why I left.  I thought I might be able to find him, if I left the planet but it was stupid.  Stupid, stupid.  I was stupid.

NOVA
Yeah, it feels stupid looking for someone even when you know they’re not going to be there.

HATOV
(beat)
Were you looking for Alula?

NOVA
(long pause)
I’m always looking for her.

HATOV
Do you love her?

NOVA
I’m not liking these questions pretty boy.

HATOV
I love Wilm.  He’s the only one of my siblings that actually cared for me.

NOVA
You remember anything about the bar?

HATOV
Oh, where is the bar?  I was on the floor and (beat) uhm (beat) where are we going?

NOVA
Geez, we’re going to get some water in you.

HATOV
I’ve had so much to drink.  I’m not thirsty.

NOVA
You are, you just don’t realize it.

HATOV
(Slightly piqued)
I think I’d know.

NOVA
Nah, you definitely wouldn’t.

HATOV
(beat)
Are we going to the ship?

NOVA
(Patiently)
Uh-huh.

HATOV
Can I sleep in a bed when we get there?

NOVA
(beat)
Don’t think you’re going to be able to tell the difference.

HATOV
I don’t remember all the drinks I had.

NOVA
You’re not really supposed to.  It’s a Viaci welcome, the whole point is to give you a good time and get you absolutely fucked out of your mind.

HATOV
I had so much fun.  (Beat) I don’t think I’ve had that much fun in my whole life.

NOVA
Yeah, you were impressive until that final round of drinks hit you.

HATOV
I was hoping to last until the music stopped.

NOVA
Oh, no, that doesn’t happen.  The song loops for as long as it takes.

HATOV
You tricked me.

NOVA
Did I?

HATOV
Did you what?

NOVA
(beat)
Maybe some food would be a good idea too.

HATOV
Wilm always said that things would be more interesting off planet.  I was always, always afraid.

NOVA
Alright, pretty boy, I’m pretty sure you’re talking about things you don’t want me to know about.  So let’s stop it on the Wilm, okay?

HATOV
I don’t care.  It’s nice to talk to somebody who listens.  Since he left, it’s only been the androids and (beat) they’re not real, no matter how much I pretend they are.

NOVA
(Sighs)
Alright, well then, what were you afraid of?

HATOV
I was afraid of this, I think?  Off planet we are like everyone else, I wasn’t ready to be treated like I was nothing again.

NOVA
What?

HATOV
Without my eyes, I am just one of seventeen children.  In the castle, that means I am nothing unless the ones who inherited the eyes died.  So, for most of my life I’ve been nothing.

NOVA
Eyes?  Did your eyes change?

HATOV
Galaxy you call them, I used to hate them so much.

NOVA
Alriighhhtt.  How’s it feel to be back to being nothing again?

HATOV
(laughs)
It’s different than the palace.  I’m nothing, but you’re kind to me anyway.

NOVA
(sighs)
I’m just using you.

HATOV
I don’t think your being nice and your using me have anything to do with each other.

NOVA
(beat)
How so?

HATOV
Where are we going?

NOVA
You’re really not going to remember any of this are you?

HATOV
Where did my goggles go?

NOVA
Hey, let’s play a game.  Give me three words that have nothing to do with each other.

HATOV
That doesn’t sound very fun.

NOVA
Just do it.

HATOV
Green, bed, stars.

NOVA
Pretty sure those things had everything to do with each other but alright.  I’ll take it.

HATOV
Did you have fun?

NOVA
Surprisingly, yes.  I had a great time.

HATOV
That’s great.  I wish you were happier.

NOVA
You remember those three words I asked you for?

HATOV
What words?

NOVA
We were playing a game.  I asked for three words that had nothing to do with each other.

HATOV
Uhm, red, spaceship, whiskey?

NOVA
Footsteps drawing to a stop.
Yeah, you’re not going to remember this.
(beat)
Ahhh how are we supposed to (beat) ladder?

HATOV
(laughs)
I can ladder.

NOVA
You cannot.  (Beat)  Maybe, maybe, alright climb up, but I’m going to be very, very close.
Sound of climbing
HATOV
Very close.

NOVA
Yup, but if you slip, I can keep you from hitting the ground.

HATOV
Sure, sure.
Mechanical door unlocks

NOVA
Home!
Sound of body hitting the floor
Pretty boy!  Ah, fuck, sorry.  Gravity, I left the artificial gravity on.
