Episode 25

Sound of sizzling

HATOV

(Sniffing, bare foot padding on floor)

What’s that? (beat) Why are you dressed like that?

NOVA

Oh, fuck.  He lives.  Probably don’t feel it though, do you pretty boy?

HATOV

I, no, I feel (beat) bad.

NOVA

Yeah, I thought so.  So, I pulled this out and dusted it off.  I figured an actual meal might be nice.

HATOV

You don’t have a kitchen.

NOVA

Well, yeah, space is limited, but (haltingly) there is a cooktop, some pots and a couple pans.  What did you think the standing sink was for?

HATOV

(dissatisfied)

Hmmm.

I feel like I died.  How did I get this bruise?

NOVA

(beat)

It’s one of the world’s greatest mysteries.

HATOV

(groaning)

So, I got it when we separated?

NOVA

(beat)

No, you were near me for almost the entire night.  You got the bruise because you weren’t ready for the artificial gravity when we walked through the door.

HATOV

What?  You’re joking.  That’s stupid.

NOVA

Yeah, it was.  It was also incredibly funny.

Sound of plate being set on the table

Eat.

HATOV

I’m not hungry.  I am very much the opposite of hungry.

NOVA

So much the opposite that you dragged your corpse here to fill yourself up on smell alone?

HATOV

(Confused)

I

NOVA

Eat.

Sound of fork scraping the plate.  A slow bite

Shoveling food into his mouth.

Sizzling stops

Sure you weren’t hungry?

HATOV

Are you going to eat that?

NOVA

(nonchalantly)

I will stab you if you get anywhere near my breakfast.

HATOV

(pause)

Snacks?

NOVA

In the corner but try drinking some water first.

(beat)

Don’t look at me like that.  I was right about the food.

HATOV

Sound of water being poured into a metal cup

What made you want to cook, now?  This would have been nice a week ago.

NOVA

Just be thankful for warm food and unpunctured hands, hmm?

HATOV

(Sipping)

You’re not a bad cook either.

NOVA

(mutters)

Nice to know that I’ve successfully lowered your standards.  (To Hatov) What do you remember about last night?

HATOV

I remember the bar and the Viaci welcome (beat) at least until (beat) uhm (obvi struggling) there was a girl?  I think her eyes were uhm (beat) green?  She gave me a tiny glass with amber liquid and I (beat) I think I drank it and (peters off)

NOVA

You remember how you got here?

HATOV

(beat)

Did we talk about Wilm?

NOVA

Not much.  I didn’t think you’d want me to know about that.  Felt private.

HATOV

(sheepishly)

Thanks, but

NOVA

You can try, but I think the other memories are thrashed.  You were shitfaced by the end there.

HATOV

Did (beat) did I do anything inappropriate?

NOVA

Honestly?  As far as drunks go you were downright pleasant.

HATOV

(Sighs)

Thank the goddess.

NOVA

you had fun, you did something stupid, and more importantly you got to relax for the first time in a while.

HATOV

And you?

NOVA

I had fun too.  A Viaci welcome is almost a miniature festival.

HATOV

I wish I could remember.

NOVA

Chair scrapes as she stands

Don’t force yourself.  One day you can do something similar for someone else.  Get to play the other side.

HATOV

I don’t think there are such things on Eolara.

NOVA

So?

HATOV

So, I’ll never get the chance.

NOVA

Aren’t you one of the successors?  Just introduce it and make it a thing.

HATOV

Commoners aren’t supposed to touch royals they can’t even look us in the eyes

NOVA

Then change that too, seems like a stupid rule.

HATOV

It’s tradition.

NOVA

It’s probably outdated.

HATOV

(Huffily)

I can’t just decide to change things

NOVA

Why not?

HATOV

Because there’s a council

NOVA

Then convince them.

HATOV

It’s not that easy.

NOVA

Never said it’d be.

HATOV

So, you’re telling me to go home and waste the council’s time so I can add something like the Viaci welcome to Eolara?

Plates clattering as she gathers them

She stands

NOVA

The only thing I’m telling you to do is

Standing

stay inside today.  Drink lots of water, if you do have to leave, make sure to wear something new, and bring Sawa with you.  They’ll be looking for someone travelling alone, not a pair.  Your voice is (beat) distinctive and so are your eyes.  The goggles are less memorable than your eyes though so use them, you might want to buy another pair though.  Sawa’ll give you access to 100 imperial units.  You’ll have to make do with that.

HATOV

(With distaste)

I’m staying inside.

NOVA

Good choice.  I’ll be back this uhm (beat) stupid moon,  I’ll be gone for a few hours.

SAWA

Have a nice trip, captain!

NOVA

Yeah

HATOV

(Absently)

Have a nice trip.

NOVA

(Pause, obviously thrown off)

Uh (beat) yeah.  I, uhm, will do that.

Door closes

HATOV

 What was that about?

SAWA

It would appear that your actions surprised the captain.

HATOV

Why?

SAWA

I am unable to answer that question.

HATOV

(pause)

I have access to whatever room I can reach, right?
