Episode 5

Arc 2 Episode 5
Sound of footsteps approaching and Hatov’s steady breathing
Polite coughing and Hatov groans
JEANNE
Wake up.

HATOV
(drowsily)
Just a few more minutes.  It’s time for (trails off)

JEANNE
(mutters)
Fuck, kid.  Do you have no survival instincts whatsoever?
(loudly)
Hatov.

HATOV
RLurches upright
Likely a panicked scream
What?  What are you—

JEANNE
(sarcastically)
Oh, good.  You’re up.

HATOV
(outraged) Why are you hovering above me?  (Quietly) My heart almost stopped.

JEANNE
Wake up call.  You slept straight through lunch

HATOV
(yawning)
I was up late.  I was feeding SAWA the translation you asked for (complaining) there was nothing in there, it was boring from beginning to end and (beat) can’t this wait for another two or three hours.  It’s too early.

JEANNE
You slept through lunch.

HATOV
There’s no sun here.  Your clock means nothing.

JEANNE
(pointedly)
What else do you do on this ship?

HATOV
(Dozing)
What kind of question is that?  I just translated an entire diary for you.

JEANNE
Before that.

HATOV
Ehm (dozes off)

JEANNE
(loudly)
Stay with me, kid.

HATOV
(drowsily annoyed)
I’m awake.  What were we—, I translated the diary and (Trails off)

JEANNE
(impatiently)
And?

HATOV
I took care of Nova when she was sick (yawns) I had to run errands, tried to cook (distracted, sleepily, laying back down) ‘m bad a cooking.  Bad at errands

JEANNE
(slowly)
And chores?

HATOV
(getting comfortable)
What chores?  There are no teachers here.  No lessons.

JEANNE
(Realizing and in disbelief)
She doesn’t make you do anything.

HATOV
What is there to do?  Nova takes care of everything.

JEANNE
Is she a maid?

HATOV
(beat) Well, no?

JEANNE
Are you somehow related?

HATOV
(irked)
What is with these questions I—

JEANNE
You’re costing money, and you aren’t paying a goddamned thing.

HATOV
I told Nova I’d pay her when I get home.

JEANNE
And in the interim, she’s already spent more than 13,000 units on you, gotten herself stabbed, cut ties with the galactic union, and nearly got herself killed with me. (Starting to leave) You can stand to do a bit of work.

HATOV
(beat, scrambling out of the hammock and following after her)
What kind of work?

JEANNE
Repairs.

HATOV
But the ship is fine.

JEANNE
(pause, sizing him up, beat)
It’s not.  You were flying with a 25% risk of hull failure.

HATOV
(beat)
Were?

JEANNE
She docked this morning.  We’re currently in my ship.

HATOV
(shocked)
In your ship?

JEANNE
Yes, it’s big.  Come on.

HATOV
(clambering out of hammock, stumbling)
What about breakfast?

JEANNE
Lunch. And you’ll eat when we reach the half-way point.

HATOV
But—

JEANNE
If you don’t work, you don’t eat.

HATOV
(long pause)
Where’s Nova?

JEANNE
Exploring.  She always wanted an A-class, this just works better for her.  Fewer forms to fill out.

HATOV
 And Alula purchased it.

JEANNE
(beat)
Yes.  That too.  (running hand along metal) It’s a good ship if she doesn’t insist on running it to hell and back.

HATOV
Wow, it’s

JEANNE
Big, yes, we’ve been over this.

HATOV
But the entire ship fits here and there’s space.

JEANNE
It’s also a bitch to land.  I don’t like using it very often, but knowing Nova.

HATOV
(realizing)
You never intended to kill her.
Jeanne pauses in her walking/stops abruptly

JEANNE
(long pause)
How much do you know about maintaining a ship?

HATOV
Well, we had a few on Eolara, but they only orbited the planet and (beat) father had others tend to it.

JEANNE
What was it used for?
(silence)
So, I’m assuming you know nothing.

HATOV
(sighs)
Yes.

JEANNE
Then it’s as good a time as any to replace everything, isn’t it?

HATOV
What?

JEANNE
We’re going to take down every panel, check the wires, rivets, and bolts, and put it all back together.

HATOV
That’ll take forever.

JEANNE
Exactly.  Nova does this every two months.  It can take her anywhere from four days to a week.

HATOV
Does she know that we’re doing this?

JEANNE
I’d be shocked if she didn’t.
Louder
SAWA!

SAWA
(through an intercom)
Yes, Jeanne?

JEANNE
I want a full rundown on the ship, every rivet, every bolt, if there’s a frayed wire I want to know.

SAWA
Would you like that compiled alphabetically or based on location?

JEANNE
Why the hell would I want it alphabetically?

SAWA
Answer unclear.  Would you like your request compiled alphabetically or based on location?

JEANNE
(muttered)
Did she really have to keep the fourth gen?  Jesus, I want the list organized by location and piece.

SAWA
Understood.  I will deliver it momentarily.

JEANNE
We’ll start from the top.

HATOV
There?

JEANNE
No.  When we’re taking this thing apart, we need to stay organized, everything should be labelled, but this is Nova we’re talking about so—

HATOV
Wait (beat) you were serious?

JEANNE
I’ll repeat this one more time.  If you don’t work, you don’t eat Hatov.
