Episode 9

NOVA

(Groans)

Alarm sounds

That’s a lie.

 Knocking sounds on the door

SAWA

You requested to be woken up.

NOVA

(Complaint)

Oh, fuck me.

SAWA

Are you awake?

NOVA

(Softly)

Unfortunately.

(Louder)

How is our guest?

SAWA

Hatov is currently trying to access the information room.

NOVA

(Unconcerned)

Now that’s interesting.  He make any progress?

SAWA

He has made one-hundred and forty-three attempts and has gotten the third and fifth number of the seven digit sequence correct on two separate attempts.

NOVA

Rolling over in a bed

That’s a no then.  Did he eat?

SAWA

He has stated that he’d rather die than use your funds.

NOVA

Die then, but he can do that just fine off of my ship.  Did you get dinner?

SAWA

Yes.

NOVA

Great.  I’m starving.

Sound of food opening

So, has he explained why he wants to die on my ship, rather than outside in the snow?

Eating

The least he could do is go somewhere I won’t have to deal with his corpse.

SAWA

It appears that he has nowhere to go.

NOVA

He’s not dying on my ship.

SAWA

His vitals are currently stable.

NOVA

Tell him he’s not allowed to die on my ship.

SAWA

Understood.

NOVA

It’s already a bucket of bolts, last thing I need is his bratty ass haunting the place

HATOV

(Outraged)

She said what?

NOVA

Prick.

Sound of stretching.

Alright.  Let’s get this started.

Dressing.

SAWA

There is no embassy fitting that description on Gnorria-658.

HATOV

Well what other planets do you frequent?

SAWA

Nova also has stops on Canos.

NOVA

Sawa

SAWA

Yes, Nova?

NOVA

Work topics are now classified as information requiring a level C permission.

SAWA

Understood.

HATOV

(Annoyed)

What did you do?

NOVA

Mmm, not sure, never tried this before. Try her now.

HATOV

Try what?

NOVA

(Like she suspects he’s a bit slow)

Ask her a question.

HATOV

Uhm, what planets do you frequent?

SAWA

That information requires C level permission.

HATOV

(Sighs, puts head in hands)

Why do you torment me?

NOVA

I don’t think, “because I think it’s funny” is the answer you’re looking for.

HATOV

I’m just trying to get home.

NOVA

And I’m trying to make a living.  Nothing is free and information costs.

HATOV

I have money (beat) just not right now.

NOVA

Money is one thing, and nothing happens until I see units.  Other trades are possible but

HATOV

Trades?

NOVA

I’m an Inco, boy, I deal in information.  And very occasionally favors but I don’t think any favor you can promise is something i’d want.

HATOV

I’m not selling my country for your scraps.

NOVA

Well, where are you from?

HATOV

(Hesitantly)

I can’t

NOVA

Sawa, where is he from?

HATOV

No!

SAWA

He claims to be from Eolara.

NOVA

(Suddenly interested)

A what now?

HATOV

Nowhere

SAWA

Eolara

NOVA

Like the place from children’s stories?

SAWA

He has indicated so.

NOVA

Then, I retract my previous statement.

HATOV

(Petulantly)

The one about me being a prick?  Or the one about me being shit?

NOVA

The one about you having nothing to trade.  You might be something interesting after all, galaxy eyes.  Does he seem to be lying, SAWA?

HHATOV

(Desperately)

Yes, precisely, I’ve made the whole thing up.  Don’t listen to her.

SAWA

His vitals would suggest that he was telling the truth.

NOVA

(Piteously)

I don’t know how androids work where you’re from, but they aren’t exactly known for their ability to lie.  Particularly the older models.

HATOV

But (beat) she’s

NOVA

A machine, now you can pretend to be her friend all you want, but don’t go around thinking she’ll bond with you.  Don’t tell her what you don’t want others to know without locking it (beat) and even then, there’s no guarantee.

HATOV

You’re disgusting

NOVA

I’m practical.  And if your brain was half as big as your mouth, you’d stop it with all the honor shit and realize something.

HATOV

And that would be what, Inco?

NOVA

That I might be exactly what you need to get home.

HATOV

Don’t try to manipulate me.

NOVA

I’ll try until my heart stops beating, but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong.  If what you say about being from Eolara is true, I can tell you right now that asking around will either be a waste of time, or it’s going to get you killed.

HATOV

There’s no danger in asking about my home.

NOVA

Your home is a legend.  A bedtime story, and if it is real, someone went through a hell of a lot of trouble to keep it a secret.  I can’t imagine they’d like someone going around planets asking questions.

HATOV

We’ve never hidden.

NOVA

So, does everybody just decide simultaneously to stay on planet despite having the technology to leave?

HATOV

Well the goddess’s doctrine states

NOVA

I’m going to stop you right there.  I don’t care about your religion or what your god or goddess or whatever says.

HATOV

(seething)

You (high pitched wine)

NOVA

Oh goddammit, fuck.  I’ve no idea what you just called me, but whatever it was, don’t do it again.

HATOV

Don’t call you a (high-pitched squeal)

NOVA

Alright, have it your way you little bastard (sound of earpiece being removed, growls unintelligibly)

HATOV

(Lets out a stream of curses)

What the hell was that?

NOVA

Can’t understand a word you’re saying there, pretty boy.  Don’t understand shit without my earpiece.  And that damn well isn’t translating you for dick.

HATOV

Why would I go with you?

NOVA

Because I’m an In co.  What better way to get forbidden information than from someone who deals in it?

HATOV

You said asking questions is dangerous.

NOVA

It is.  But if you ask the right people and pay the right price, things start looking less bleak.

HATOV

If what you say is true, how do you even know anyone will know where I’m from?

NOVA

Her

HATOV

The android?

NOVA

Mhmm, you didn’t seem surprised by her.  Even manipulated her based on her coding, right?  I don’t suppose your Eolara simply births droids simultaneously with the rest of the galaxy.  What model are you on?  Thirteen?

HATOV

Uh

NOVA

You ever wonder where they were coming from?

HATOV

(Surprised)

I never thought about it

NOVA

So, someone out there is selling droids to your planet.  Which means, someone out there knows that Eolara isn’t just a legend.  We just have to find the right data trail and

SAWA

Jeanne is calling.

NOVA

Seriously?

SAWA

She appears angry.

NOVA

(Exasperated, and realizing)

I was supposed to meet Alleera today.  Ah, that bitch.

SAWA

Jeanne is calling.

NOVA

Shut up, I know.  (To HATOV) I gotta take this.  Stay quiet, if you think I’m deplorable you don’t want Jeanne to even suspect you exist.
